For the loaf:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

3/4 cup brown sugar, packed

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 medium apple, peeled, cored, and diced (about 1 cup)

For the cinnamon swirl:

1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1 tsp ground cinnamon

2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

For the glaze (optional):

1/2 cup powdered sugar

2 tbsp milk

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions
 

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5 loaf pan and set aside.

    In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg; set aside.

      In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.

        Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Start with the flour mixture, add some buttermilk, mix, then repeat until all ingredients are combined. Fold in the diced apple.

          In a small bowl, combine the 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon for the swirl. Mix with the melted butter until well combined.

            Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon swirl mixture over the batter. Pour the remaining batter on top, spreading it evenly. Finish by sprinkling the rest of the cinnamon swirl mixture on top and gently swirl it with a knife to create a swirled effect.

              Bake in the preheated oven for 55-65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

                Allow the loaf to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

                  If desired, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl to create a glaze. Drizzle over the cooled loaf before slicing and serving.
