Go Back
The origins of apple cider donuts can be traced back to the early 20th century in New England, where apple orchards flourished, and cider-making became an autumn tradition. As families gathered to harvest apples, they would often create various culinary delights, including donuts, using the fresh apple cider produced during the pressing season. This tradition of making donuts from apple cider has since evolved, but the essence remains the same: celebrating the bountiful harvest and the flavors of fall.

Ingredients

1 cup apple cider

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

½ teaspoon salt

¾ cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

¼ cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ cup buttermilk

¼ cup granulated sugar (for cinnamon-sugar coating)

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for cinnamon-sugar coating)

Instructions

Reduce the Apple Cider: Pour the apple cider into a small saucepan and simmer over medium heat. Cook until it's reduced to about ½ cup (approximately 10-15 minutes). Set aside to cool slightly.

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut pan with non-stick cooking spray.

Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, beat the sugar and eggs until smooth. Add the melted butter, vanilla extract, buttermilk, and the reduced apple cider. Mix well.

Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; the batter should be slightly lumpy.

Fill the Donut Pan: Transfer the batter to a piping bag or a zip-top bag with a corner cut off. Pipe the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about 2/3 full.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes until the edges are lightly browned and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool: Let the donuts cool in the pan for about 5 minutes, then gently remove them and place on a wire rack to cool completely.

Prepare Cinnamon-Sugar Coating: In a small bowl, combine ¼ cup sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon.

Coat the Donuts: Once the donuts are slightly warm, roll each donut in the cinnamon-sugar mixture, coating both sides generously.

Serve and Enjoy: Serve these irresistible apple cider donuts immediately, or store in an airtight container for later enjoyment.
