Ingredients

1 loaf of brioche bread (about 14-16 ounces), cut into 1-inch cubes

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon salt

½ cup packed brown sugar (for topping)

1 tablespoon butter (for greasing)

Optional toppings: fresh berries, whipped cream, or maple syrup

Instructions

Prepare the Baking Dish: Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter to prevent sticking.

Mix the Custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until well combined.

Combine Bread and Custard: Place the brioche cubes into the greased baking dish, evenly distributing them. Pour the custard mixture over the bread and gently press down to ensure the bread is soaked.

Overnight Rest: Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the bread to absorb the custard.

Preheat the Oven: The next day, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake the French Toast: Remove the plastic wrap and sprinkle the top with brown sugar. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the center is set.

Caramelize the Sugar: For an extra crème brûlée effect, switch the oven to broil while keeping a close eye on the French toast. Broil for 2-3 minutes until the sugar has melted and caramelized to a golden brown (avoid burning).

Serve: Allow the French toast to cool slightly before serving. Use a spatula to cut into squares, and serve warm with fresh berries, whipped cream, or a drizzle of maple syrup.
