Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of cheddar cheese

2 tbsp butter

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Optional: Pickles or your favorite condiments for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Cook until they caramelize, stirring occasionally, about 10–15 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

Shape the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Gently mix until combined, then form into two large patties that are slightly larger than your slices of bread.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet used for the onions, add the patties. Cook over medium-high heat for about 4 minutes on each side or until they are cooked to your preferred doneness. Top each patty with a slice of cheese during the last minute of cooking to allow it to melt.

Assemble the Melt: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer one cheeseburger patty, half of the caramelized onions, then top with the second slice of rye bread, buttered side up.

Grill the Patty Melt: In the same skillet (add more butter if needed), place the assembled sandwiches and grill over medium heat until golden brown, about 3–4 minutes per side. Press down gently with a spatula to ensure even browning and melting.

Serve: Once golden and crispy on both sides, remove from the skillet. Let rest for a minute, then slice in half. Serve hot with pickles or your favorite condiments.
