Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

1/2 cup whole milk, warmed

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)

1 egg (for egg wash)

Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Make Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt. Pour in the activated yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.

Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours or until doubled in size.

Prepare Filling: In a medium bowl, mix the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and chopped nuts (if using).

Shape Dough: Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into four equal pieces. Roll each piece into a circle with a diameter of about 12 inches.

Layer Circles: Place one dough circle on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Spread a third of the cinnamon filling mixture on top. Add the second dough circle, spread another third of the filling, then layer with the third circle and the last third of the filling. Finish with the fourth dough circle on top.

Cut and Twist: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into 16 equal sections from the center to the edge, leaving the center intact. Take two adjacent sections and twist them away from each other, then pinch the ends together. Repeat until all sections are twisted.

Second Rise: Cover the shaped star bread with a kitchen towel and let it rise for another 30-40 minutes until puffy.

Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Egg Wash: Beat the egg with a tablespoon of water and brush the egg wash over the bread to give it a golden finish.

Bake: Bake the star bread in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

Cool and Dust: Allow the bread to cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
