Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)

For the Cookie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x9 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

    Make the Brownie Layer:

      - In a medium bowl, mix the melted butter with granulated sugar until combined.

        - Add in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition, followed by the vanilla extract.

          - Sift in the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir until just combined. If desired, fold in the chocolate chips. Set aside.

            Make the Cookie Layer:

              - In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

                - Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until smooth and well incorporated.

                  - In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.

                    Assemble the Browkies:

                      - Spread the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan in an even layer.

                        - Gently dollop spoonfuls of the cookie dough atop the brownie layer. Use a spatula or the back of a spoon to spread it out evenly, or leave it in clumps for a marbled effect.

Bake: Place the pan in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs (not wet batter).

Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for about 20 minutes. Once cooled, lift the brownies out using the parchment paper and cut them into desired squares.

Enjoy: Serve warm for an extra fudgy experience or at room temperature. They pair perfectly with vanilla ice cream or a glass of milk!
