Ingredients

12 lasagna noodles

1 pound ground beef

1 pound Italian sausage

1 medium onion, chopped

4 garlic cloves, minced

2 cans (28 oz each) crushed tomatoes

2 cans (6 oz each) tomato paste

2 tablespoons tomato sauce

2 teaspoons sugar

2 teaspoons dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 container (15 oz) ricotta cheese

1 egg

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook Noodles: Boil lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, add ground beef, Italian sausage, and chopped onion. Cook until meat is browned, about 8-10 minutes. Add garlic, and cook for another minute.

Make Sauce: Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, sugar, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Mix Ricotta Filling: In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well to create a smooth filling.

Assemble Lasagna: Spread a layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Place 4 noodles on top, then spread 1/3 of the ricotta mixture, 1/3 of the mozzarella, and 1/4 of the remaining meat sauce. Repeat layers twice more, ending with noodles and the remaining meat sauce.

Top It Off: Spread the remaining mozzarella cheese evenly on top. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.

Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, spray foil with cooking spray). Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.

Rest and Serve: Allow the lasagna to cool for about 15-20 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
